While the actor had for the longest time maintained that he has honorary or dual citizenship, in his latest Tweet he says he has never denied that he has never hidden that he holds a Canadian passport. While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others," he said in a statement, he issued on Twitter.

In 2010, The Economist questioned the actor about his strong ties with Canada and he had replied that he holds dual citizenship. During a press conference in February 2017, Akshay had stated that he only has honorary citizenship. He told the journalist who asked the question, "It was not what you think."
